Malaria is one of the biggest disease killers in the world. It kills at least 1.5 million people every year. 70% of the deaths are children under 5. That's equivalent to one child dying of malaria in Africa every 30 seconds, or 7 jumbo jets full of children disappearing from malaria every day. We can make an enormous difference with the money we raise. For every £1million (US$1.75m) we raise we will stop 15,000 people from dying. We can do this very simply: through the purchase and distribution of bednets (mosquito nets).

On bednets (mosquito nets). Specifically, long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs). Hopefully many millions of them. Each bednet costs about US$5. Not only will we buy them, we will make sure they are installed over people's beds, particularly those of young children and pregnant women.

This grassroots initiative has very few costs. Those that do exist are covered by a group of businessmen in London. As a result every single dollar we receive will go to the people who need it. 100%. That makes this fundraising effort unique on this scale. For example, there are no costs involved in organising a fundraising event; you organise the event, and there is no marketing budget. There will be substantial marketing to make people aware of this initiative but none will be paid for. We have received pro bono assistance from many individuals and organisations around the world to help make this a success.

We will tell you on this website. We will detail how every dollar is being spent. We will list all programmes and bednet purchases and where they are to be distributed and how. As a registered charity we have a legal responsibility to demonstrate to the UK Charity Commission that we do what we say we will do. What we tell them, we will tell you. Complete transparency is at the heart of what we are doing.

All sorts of people. Against Malaria is an initiative of the Against Malaria Foundation (AMF), a charity registered in the UK, US, Australia and a number of other countries. AMF launched and ran World Swim Against Malaria (WSM) on 3rd Dec 2005 in which more than 250,000 people swam and fundraised. 100% of the US$1.3m raised purchased 270,000 long lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) which are now being distributed to protect 540,000 (mainly) children from biting insects when they sleep at night.
